Melinda Looi is the versatile child prodigy of a hard working seamstress. Moving between art and fashion, she paints, cuts, sews and experiments to transform fabrics with a radical obsession. Melinda trained initially at the La Salle School of Fashion in Kuala Lumpur before winning a scholarship to continue her training at the parent school in Montreal, Canada based on an outstanding graduation collection in KL which also earned her the Malaysia Young Designer Award in 1995.
Many other international awards followed. making her to be one of the most influential and iconic designers in Malaysia and the region,dressing royals and an international clientele that includes celebrities and socialites.
THE JOURNEY
Upon gaining valuable experience working for designer brands and fashion houses in Canada, Melinda Looi founded Mellooi Creation (MCSB) after returning to Kuala Lumpur in 2000, where she continues to be based. MCSB has its own couture and ready-to-wear outlets as well as production line. Over the years, the company has built a strong international network of partners and suppliers which has contributed to its achieving a leading position in Malaysia and a growing presence regionally. In 2009, a new company and brand by the name of Mell Basics was launched. Starting out as a ‘retail only’ brand, it has today transformed into 'Designer Uniforms by Melinda Looi' a B2B one-stop-service provider for corporates seeking unique apparel and uniforms. Drawing from Melinda Looi’s creative expertise and international network of suppliers, these uniform projects range from the small and unique to mass-market initiatives, all at very competitive prices. Among the company’s customers are brands such as The Body Shop, Siemens, Panasonic, HSBC Bank and the Malaysian Government, for which the company registered the National Sports Team attire.
In 2018 the designer expanded her creative touch into the world of Interior Design. Working with HNWI and developers alike the Melinda Looi ID Team offers interior architecture services, which combine the designing and building of exceptional spaces. Branded as 'BESPOKE ID by Melinda Looi' this is a branded service, and hence BESPOKE ID teams up with leading luxury partners and lifestyle brands in there projects offering a one-stop-solution beyond design&build but also including marketing and procurement services.
